abstract

objective(s): the aim of the present study is to determine the effect of chloramphenicol (cap) on rat liver and small intestine. effect of phenobarbital (pb) on cap toxicity was also investigated.   materials and methods:   rats were received cap at doses of 0, 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg. another group was pretreated with 80 mg/kg pb 30 min prior to administration of various doses of cap. the experiment was repeated for seven consecutive days. blood was collected for determination of serum aspartate aminotransferase (ast) alanine aminotransferase (alt). the liver and small intestine tissues were processed for light microscopy.   results:   cap induced a dose dependent elevation of ast and alt and produced injury in the liver and small intestine when compared to control animals. pb markedly decreased ast and alt levels and protected liver and small intestine against cap-induced toxicity.   conclusion   : this study suggested rat liver and small intestine have potential to bioactivate cap.

The Protective Effect of Silymarin on Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Liver Toxicity in Male Wistar Rat

Background and Aims: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) triggers production of reactive oxygen species and inflammatory cytokines. Nowadays Silybum marianum has been shown to treat liver and gall bladder disorders, especially to protect the liver against poisoning from various toxins. Therefore, we decided to evaluate the protective effect of silymarin on LPS-induced liver toxicity in male Wistar rat. M...

Protective role of ferulic acid against the damaging effect induced by electromagnetic waves on rat liver and intestine tissues

Background: the increasing use of mobile phones in daily life causes many concerns about their effects on human health. Therefore, this work was designed to study the effects of exposure to 1800 MHz electromagnetic waves (EMW) on the liver and intestine of male albino rats and the protective role of ferulic acid (FA) against these harmful effects. Materials and Methods: twenty-four male albino ...

Protective Effect of Wrightia Tinctoria Bark Triterpenoidal Fraction on Ccl4-Induced Acute Rat Liver Toxicity

The present investigation aims at assessing the hepatoprotective effect of triterpene fraction isolated from the stem bark of Wrightia tinctoria (containing lupeol, b -amyrin and b -sitosterol) on CCl 4 -induced hepatotoxicity in the rat. CCl 4 (1.5 mg/kg, i.p) is a potent hepatotoxic agent which causes peroxidative degeneration of membrane lipids with the potential outcome of fatt...
